THE BEGINNING

A Vision Built on Hard Work

The story of Samra Produce begins with founder Harbhajan Singh Samra, who came to California in the 1980s with a background in economics and a determination to build a life and business of his own.

Recognizing a growing demand for vegetables that were difficult to find in American markets, Mr. Samra began supplying Indian restaurants and markets with specialty produce.

In the beginning, the operation was anything but large. He sold vegetables directly from the back of his pickup truck, personally serving customers and building relationships one customer at a time.

GROWING THROUGH CHALLENGES

Turning Setbacks Into Opportunity

As demand for specialty produce grew, so did Mr. Samra's vision. After establishing a produce business in Los Angeles, he turned his attention toward farming.

His early farming experience came with significant challenges, including the loss of his first farm and substantial financial setbacks. Rather than giving up, he studied what went wrong and used those experiences to develop a better approach.

His determination eventually led him to California's Coachella Valley, where the climate and growing conditions provided an ideal environment for the specialty crops he was committed to bringing to market.
